Yes Marion I posted the wrong one.All the way through Daves campaign he has banged on about the number of new apprenticeships that he would create which is great news for the young boys and girls coming up.

I think you will find Vic that the order books for new build around the time you mention was at an all time low.

Jim, S.L. had a good order book through the late sixties into the mid seventies. They even set up their own apprentice training school. Their biggest problem was the shortage of skilled men.
Ecery suggestion that they tried the Unions blocked.
As I have posted before when Nationalised the Labour Government wanted a 20% increase in output for no extra cash. The Government wanted a relaxation of demarcation rules which the unions fought tooth and nail to keep.
Labour wanted to reduce the the Union agreements from a 126 to manageable few again, the unions fought it off.
When the unions agreed to changes of course it was too little to late.
As an aside to build a ship in a European Yard took 6-8 months, with the Union practices in the UK Yards, it took nearer twenty months to build the same ship.

Hi All.
John's right; the unions here have lost many many members. To start I remember when the union was 90%, everyone had a job, there were still people who wouldn't join a union, I remember one in particular until he reached retirement age; this brickie had refused to join the bricklayers union, then one day he came into the office and said that he had been refused a pension, it turned out he had always worked cash in hand, no one knew anything about him, he had no savings no pension DU.
I also remember when the unions decided to get the arbitration court to refuse any non unionists any wage rise that the unions got, fare enough as they never contributed to it, the journalists were in full agreement, the screams were heard all across the country by people who opposed joining the unions, it was similar to if you don't vote don't be a winger.
Then the Liberal govt was elected, and after eight years of them, and the Vulture Murdoch press, who told the journalists write what I want or get another job, it saw off many good ones who refused, all he wanted was a concentrated attack on the union movement why?. They are now down to around 26%. In the meantime Australia a great country has become struggle street for the young of today, it has gone from a few homeless drunks sleeping rough; to over 150,000 people sleeping on the streets you can't blame the unions for that!!, Around 6% unemployment, can't blame the Unions for that!! the Liberal Govt in NSW throwing Families who have lived in their homes for a hundred years onto the street as they are in a prime position on the Harbour can't blame the unions for that!!, now they are building posh high rise flats for rich Chinese to buy so they can get the buyers tax off them can't blame the unions for that!!, which they then waste, on useless motorways to nowhere, they are now turning into massive car parks, can't blame the unions for that!!
The gov't now proposes that young people up to 25 should wait six months for the dole, what if they are married with kids, can't blame the unions for that!! Members of parliament's wives have been double dipping on child welfare, can't blame the unions for that!!
I could go on forever, but one last thing John said that it cost Victoria a mint to build the water reticulation plant because of big union perks, here in NSW they built one then the Liberal
Govt sold it without tender to a company [probably mates] who will now receive millions a year just to keep it in mothballs.

Some years back when managing a department store in house catering then union came to sat there was to be a meeting and one person from each site must go to represent the other members. None of my staff were interested and when union Joe came back and I told him he went off like a two bob watch. I told him my staff all had minds of their own and did not wish to be involved in the union stouch they were not automaton that we had to change the battery in every Monday A few minutes later the security men arrived to escort him off the premises. He had failed to book in on arrival and the shop steward had called personnel who ordered him off. We never saw him again.
