when shopping in thirsk yesterday i spotted a ....what could be described as a bevvy of older seamen.....very smartly dressed innavy blazers ....complete with merchant navy badge .......grey flanels ....and in the highest of merchant humour ........i asked if there were any vindi boys and of course yes was the reply .......1946 was his answer.......it seemed they were from hull ...and have a monthly away day to different towns .....i was pleased to see such a smart bunch of lder seamen enjoying themselves ......not reminiscent of themselves 40 or50 years ago .....coming out of ma gleasons or any other jungle type bar ...all credit to a fine body of seamen from hull

Kingston upon Hull, once sailed from there, odd place. Only town in UK with it's own postal service but the pubs were OK.

its got a place called the land of green ginger ........and an old time trawler which you can board and look around .....interesting ...regards cappy

Kingston upon Hull, once sailed from there, odd place. Only town in UK with it's own postal service but the pubs were OK.

And its own telephone system with green and cream telephone boxes, probably all gone by now. Great place when I lived there, the fitting out docks and short sea trader docks right in the middle of town inviting us all to go sea because we thought all ships were new and shiny, that is until I joined my 1914 distant water built trawler in 1951 in Hull Fish Docks, a rude awakening, but never put me off. And when we as young men had bikes instead of cars it was great with lack of hills when you had a maiden on the cross bar racing for the back lanes and a kiss and cuddle, perhaps the odd fish finger.

I do recall a number of us coming back from one pub a little under the weather. The ship was the other side of the harbour and one bright spark said we should get into one of the many small boats there and row across. Fantastic idea, in we got and started to row. It took us about half an hour oif going nowhere to understand all the samll boats were chained together.

Seems like a quaint place to visit!
One day if I get the chance again I will take Hull in!

It may have been the Georges Hotel ! But as you were under the Weather Mmmm! LOL

Not only is the George Hotel in Hull one of the oldest surviving pubs in the city, dating back to 1683, it also boasts what is claimed to be the smallest window in England.

Originally a coaching inn, its window - which is more like a slit in the wall - is said to have been used by the porter to look out for stagecoaches and customers so they could be given immediate attention.
