I did all my ' Tickets, steam and motor, there. In those days the Marine Engineering School was without any doubt the best in the UK, the highest pass rates in the shortest time of all the other schools in the land. Mr Heath ( better known as Ted ) ran the department with the aid of some very competent tutors who just loved their jobs. Most of the students had lodgings on Anlaby Road -- huge Georgian style houses owned by elderly widows who needed to take in Lodgers in order to pay their way -- they were second mothers to us all. They liked to boast that 'my' students had the best pass rate of any other boarding house. I just loved the place !! Regards Peter in NZ.

I joined two Port Line ships in Hull 1961. The MV Port Alfred and the MV Port Vindex and remember very well the phone boxes in cream and green and am I right in thinking that the buses were also in that livery?
I also recall that those of us in the crew who had not had our anti polio treatment were sent to a clinic to recieve the SALK sugar lump.

We have the 'one punch' laws in place in a couple of states here in Oz but they have not stopped the violence. Police are of the opinion most of the damage is caused by the drugs they take, mainly 'ice' along with others, claim the brain is half dead from them before the hit. But I can recall the fights between dockers in the days of six o'clock swill where they would fight with lumps pf four by two, iron pipes and other weapons, but no one died.

That was the dockers way, the seamen were more sophisticated!!

Saw a lot of that sort of thing especially in the Harbours around South Africa in those days!
The Black workers loved to have fights with their bale Hooks,and there were some really nasty incidents !
When I was Stevedoring in Cape Town,it was rife with that kind of thing and the Police were called many many times over!
Blood and Guts everywhere!

It was always caused by friction between the various tribes!
