Re: Strange Pubs
Found this excerpt whilst reading about public houses:The Waterloo Bar in Argyle St, Glasgow is a gay bar and "Betty" apparently a star turn. "Betty Hutton" was called Bobby, and when he was "offstage" (out of drag, and sober) he was quiet and great company. He was also an accomplished linguist, and allegedly could speak at least seven fluently (although this gave rise to the story that he couldn't say "no" an any of them.
Yes he had a younger partner who he called "the wean", and they say he was faithful, and that the relation lasted several years. There was a crayon portrait of him at one time hanging in the Waterloo Bar, prompting me to ask if he had passed away. I was told he had "retired" from the scene.
There is a legend that he was arrested by the police in drag while promenading in Queens Park, and was obliged to appear in court. The Sheriff asked for his name.
"Betty" came the reply.
"No, that won't do", replied the Sheriff. "What is your real name?"
"Betty HUTTON!" responded our heroine.......
"No no" continued the exasperated official - you must give me your real and proper name or you will be in danger of perjuring yourself"......
"Oh very well then" puffing up to her full height "ELIZABETH HUTTON!"
There followed a reading out of the charges, causing a breach of the peace etc etc at which point the bold Betty interjected........
"From where I'm standing, I'm not the only one here strutting around in a wig and a gown - what's your excuse....?"
It is not recorder what the final outcome was, but Betty continued to amuse her public for many years in her own inimitable way.

Re: Strange Pubs
The only Bettys Bar I knew in Glasgow Marion, was opposite the General Terminus next to the Chain Ferry. Used to go and try and get rid of the harlots from such place in the morning before the Dockers came on board. Carried one as a stoway once but were only going as far as Liverpool. She was kept in the Sea Cabin on the bridge, a bit too convenient for the watchkeepers, never heard of any complaints though. The police took her off at Liverpool. I often wonder if she continued to try and stowaway. There was a famous one in Port Talbot who when met ashore used to say to me , we could tell some stories couldnt we, she had more seatime in than a lot of the seamen. Also met her ashore in Narvik. She was very kind to the seafarers during the big strike and went out of her way to buy drinks for as most were on the bones of their rear end. Anyhow Anyone in the ore carriers at the time who were in Glasgow would remember the Bettys bar I am referring to, a well frequented establishment . Cheers John S.

Re: Strange Pubs
I was in Bettys Bar in Glasgow on New Years Eve 196o when on the Memphis.
some of the "Girls", they were like all in wrestlers, a hard bunch came on board, Drinking in the mess room, a fight started, I legged it, and they wiped out the Firemen and the ABs. They stampeded down the alleyway smashing in the cabin doors, so I legged it up the fore deck to the rope locker and stayed there all night. They then went up to the Engineers alley way and filled in some Engineers.
Some on called the Police and after a while they turned up, and another battle with the cops before they could get them into the Van and take them away..
Hard women they were. Never went to Bettys Bar again.
Brian.
