I lived quite close to the Gladstone,I remember one time there was a fire I'm not sure if it was aboard the Blu Flu ship or in the shed.It was crepe rubber or something similar I know it was dropping out of the air and sticking on our windows.I remember the window cleaners wanting more money than usual to clean the windows.

Ken why I thought it must've been in the shed because I know at the time that it was said molten rubber was running down the gutters. You lived about a mile away then Ken and I did'nt know it travelled that far.In 1964 Blue Flu ship Pyrrhus had a nasty fire she had tobe evacuated twice in case she capsized because of the sheer volume of water that was pumped into her.

    PYRRHUS
Just found a letter dated 16 November 1964 copied to my Dad ( Capt W. J. Hartley) when he was Assistant Harbour Master in Liverpool.

"......in particular Captain Hartley, who was acting in the absence of the Harbour Master..... I appreciate the various problems which arose during the operations and the fact that the PYRRHUS did not capsize , thus causing a major disaster, is a tribute to the skill with which these were met and resolved. " C. Dove General Manager MDHB

So, the "hole in the hull" technique worked again !

    Regards
    Brenda
PS I love this site. So many of my Dad's papers begin to make sense !
