Am I right in thinking that there was a suspicion of arson causing the fire on the Empress of Canada as it broke out in a number of places?
Sailed on the new E of Canada, lovely looking ship and great fun to work on.

Richard I also noticed was Empress of Australia, but I thought it may have been deliberate to celebrate Australia Day
Not really Ivan, but I'll accept that as a compliment.

Richard I went aboard the Gothic when she was in Liverpool 1953,I was a Sea Cadet at the time I thought she was in the Blue Flu berth right across from the CPR berth.Maybe you were in such a hurry to pay off and get home you would'nt have noticed the Canada.

Now I'm confused, Jim. Could be that with getting organised and it was my very last trip as crew and I was booked on the Queen Elizabeth to sail on 1st April for New York to start a new life as an immigrant to stay with my uncle in Toronto, Canada. I got there but that's another story!!

Some time after the 'Empress of Canada' incident there was another fire in a dock on a ship carrying fish meal. My Dad (Capt. W.J Hartley) was Dock Master at the time. He suggested cutting a hole in the hull to release the water. The owners wouldn't hear of it until he reminded them how much CPR had had to pay MDHB because Gladstone Dock was out of action for such a long time. The owners agreed and it then became standard practice. He never got any credit for it~ that went to MDHB's General Manager. Dad was on the Dock for 3 days and nights. Came home stinking like a box of kippers.
Can't remember the name of the ship
