wasn't there a story about a guy that put a coin machine in a free council car park and got away with it for years and was only discovered after he retired(abroad) or was this an urban myth

can recall a story a few years ago about an elderly man who collected the money in a large car park with his officers hat and leather bag up too 70 or 80 cars a day when he didn't turn up him being such a nice old chap many regular customers rang the council to find out if he was ill .....the council new nothing about him .....he had been doing it for years it was a free parking lot .......at the time he wasn't found ....I really hope the old lad got to live in the sun .....somewhere like perth ......I believe he was an old seaman from the north shields area andhis hat had a bit of scrambled egg on it ........john saborne might no......that's funny he was from north shields and now lives in perth wonder if he knows him.....regards cappy
