    Default Captain cook.

I have just recieved an email ad from Cunard advertising one of their South Pacific cruises. in it it refers to
one of the tours in Tahiti,
    .
........Point Venus is named after the infamous Captain James Cook’s scientific observation mission of the Planet Venus. Point Venus was the landing place of the first European discoverers and where the only lighthouse in Tahiti can be found. You’ll stop to take in the historic sights and special island atmosphere of this location.................
    .
I have been on WIKIPEDIA and read all about the 1769 mission to observe the transit of Venus
I can find No reference anything being Infamous.
Has anyone else got any information on an infamous act.??
    Cheers

The only infamous act I can think of was his murder in Hawaii by the locals.
But we do have his house here in the melbourne gardens moved brick by brick many years ago.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

Brian, there is something in my head about him having someone hanged for no good reason except that he found Cook to be somewhat inept. Cook feared he would be overruled so he used a trumped up charge of treason to get rid of his opponent. I can't remember the whole story but I think the hanging took place somewhere on the west coast of South America.
Perhaps someone can fill in the details.
    Regards

    Brian ,

There is a fascinating book called Tupaia about Cook's Polynesian navigator, it is by Joan Druet.
