John I dont know if you like me have never been so well off since I retired.I know that all the pensioners I know allways say how well off that they are today. Many I knew when they were working owed their wages out when they got paid on Friday and off they would go again on Monday borrowing again till the end of the week and so it went on week in week out.,now on a pension they are well off.I think most of us are in the enviable position of having brought up our families which was'nt always easy but I'm sure that it was a lot easier than a young couple of today with a mortgage and bringing three kids up.I think we should be thankfull that we were about at the time we were and not today.
    Regards.

Poverty in Children is when they do not the same as their mates, a mobile phone , Blackbury, these things cost 500 quid or so. And an I pad or pod. and so on. That is real poverty he insisted. What a load of crap.
They do not know what poverty is.
We had Real Poverty in the 30s and 40s. no Child Benefit No benefits at all, not a Penny.
I have been , as a child, on the tips scratching for bits of coal and wood to burn, if I wanted a bike we went on the tips and find an old frame , maybe a week later find a wheel and so on and in six months could build a bike, No one bought me one. Today they have bikes costing hundreds.
If Dad had no money in the 30s I remember the Man from the Parish, coming in. Sell that chair, only one chair each for adults, we kids had to stand at the table. Sell that wireless, one with a big glass battery inside that you charged at the corner shop every Saturday for a couple of pennies. and so on through the house when you have sold them and spent up you may get a couple fo shillings off the Parish. We had three of us, sister and big brother and me in one bed, a WW1 Army overcoat on the bed to keep warm. one gas mantle in the front kitchen nothing in the back kitchen, cook on the fire, no lights up stairs, just a candle. midden at the bottom of the yard to crap in.
    No bathroom or hot water,
We were still a happy family. My Dad being in the Bolton Borough Brass band played his E-Flat Bass to us every night, we didnt need a TV or Radio.
I swore that I would never go back to those days and tried my very best to keep out of debt, if I wanted something I saved up for it, No HP no interest. When I got marrued I saved up to buy a table and chairs for the dining room, we did without for four years, I saved up for every item of furniture, If I cannot afford it, do without, I did in the old days and still do now.
So to me , Today there is NO POVERTY. it is self inflicted, Politics have nothing to do with it, it is just common sense.
    Cheers

Rob, You are quite correct it was down to Ed Balls, But given the facts of this poor babies plight I would have to question the court's decision in this case £600,000 Never justice in my opinion.Terry.

There is a simple procedure , which runs something like

    Notice of Disciplinary
Disciplinary hearing with representation if required at least 24 hours from notice . The hearing should be impartial
The results of that hearing in a reasonable time
    enactment of the findings
    The appeal
    The results of the appeal
    The final appeal
The results of the finl appeal

Do that and the tribunal will award in the company's favour , deviate , land you pay the price

We have an undue number of pay day lenders sprining up here, they give leeches a bad name by their actions. But one of the most prolific ways people are getting into trouble here is with a large department store, Harvey Norman, has stores in Ireland as well. Offers such things sa 20 months interest free with no repaymenst. People buy thousands of dollars worth thinking it will be OK. Then comes the end of the 20 month period, thye have made no paymenst in thta time and in comes the interest rate at 30%. Greta way to buy if you are disiplined enough to manage it correctly.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

That is what Ed Balls did , so the council , ultimately the taxpayers of the Borough , pay for it , that money has to come from somewhere , it won't be from Ed. Balls up though . Shoesmith won the tribunal because of the procedure not being followed . It sickens me that justice in the UK is getting harder to find

I recall a couple of years ago watching an English couple celebrating their wedding ceremony on the island of Mauritius. Lovely setting and very romantic. There were four other people attending, one official who was (hopefully) empowered to actually marry them,a witness to the ceremony, and two hotel staff. We met them later that evening in the bar- still in their bridal gear sitting together - just the two of them. Got chatting and we were a bit taken aback when they told us what it cost for the whole package ( a lot) and 'just bang it on the plastic' seemed to be the answer. Apparently none of their friends or even relatives could afford to travel to attend. I realise it is a special day, especially for the bride but i wonder just how long their debt would last. Fifty three years ago we were married in Norris Green parish church and had the reception in a room upstairs in a pub near Scottie Road in Liverpool ( the Hamlet- gone now) no plastic and the landlady ( my sister) provided some food and i put £10 behind the bar ( my pay off from a Skin Boat- the Changinola) and got change at the end of the night! Less than a week later i was back in Garston docks signing on again. No debt- no heavies banging on my door. Keep it simple i say and you sleep at night.
