Re: The Health and Safety can be alittle strange at times
Its the same as people opposing the building of power stations etc in their area, but those same people go into their house, flick a switch and the light comes on, as long as its coming from some other area. A new road always gathers huge opposition, the same people jump in their car and use a road that annoys someone elsewhere, They all live in a house but dont build near me!! KT

Ah Ah ! that is why the corkheads make the ferry so ludicrously expensive to keep the Oveners over here , so we don't go there and build

that is harder than Geordie , We only keep all the prisons over there so the inmates get confused on their release and think they have been transported to another Galaxy

Re: The Health and Safety can be alittle strange at times
Regarding Health and Safety, where do the Advocates of such put the Health and Safety of ships crews in the following example... Some of us may have been in positions on handing over vessels to Foreign owners. In the 2 cases that I was involved in we were told by the Vendor to give no information to the buyers and all ships papers were shredded apart from the original stability books and plans which were passed on with ship. We all Know that every ship has its own peculiarities and possible minor faults which are passed on in handover notes It goes against the grain to conform to such orders especially as these are the people shoving Health and Safety down your neck so as to appear politically correct. I don't care what nationality a seaman is he is still in the same profession and deserves better consideration and help when joining to those who are brand new to a ship. I personally did not adhere to this order if I thought there was something of importance that the following new crew should be aware of, and did so. I was severely admonished on one occasion as the buyer had 50,000 pounds knocked off the price of vessel through the what I considered a safety issue. Shipping is and always has been a dog eat dog business and the owners of various companies consider their counterparts rivals in opposition, as a seaman I think those who work a ship should know all about the vessel as possible. Apparently not the average shipowner. The two facedness of such is really outstanding in my mind. Regards John Sabourn

Re: The Health and Safety can be alittle strange at times
It seems to me that the illegal boat people that this country is being swamped with have more knowledge than the average, or at least they think they do. The situation 2 days ago of a boat sinking not too far off the Indonesian coast and them phoning up Australian authorities to come and get them beggars believe. Australian warships hundreds of miles away and in some cases thousands have no obligation to proceed to their assistance, as closer vessels presumably some of which are Indonesian are right on their doorstep. The loss of 29 lives which the pro boat people are trying to blame on Australia is an obscenity. They are responsible for their own actions, and I would suggest the Australian Authorities adopt the Health and Safety Regulations of the UK and have a management meeting and discuss the dangers of proceeding to sea to assist, and if the weather is bad to wait until it abates, they are even now complaining that the Australian Navies response time is too slow. That muddle headed last government left a lot of clearing up to do, and are even now boasting about what a good job they did when in power, and writing books to go down in history as such. What a shower of s..t. John Sabourn

Re: The Health and Safety can be alittle strange at times
The report I had about that boat that sank in Javanese waters, was that they were lost, they had been going around in circles, the engine then conked out. there was a kind of mayday but if they were lost then they did not know their position.
The search and rescue could not operate as the Indian Ocean is so big. it could have taken days or weeks to discover where it was.
They were in Indonesian Territorial waters and another country`s warships would not have been welcome.
The Indonesians should have done the rescue and also Stopped the people smugglers from operating.
A woman from Afghanistan said she had paid 10,000 dollars for the trip. So what is all that about.?
Cheers
Brian.
