Fascinating info on left and right handed driving.
I always thought and told overseas persons the reason we drive on the left was as you said, to leave your right hand free to draw your sword when on horse back.
The port to port passing rule for ships was explained in the program by the fact that Britain was the first country to introduce navigation rules and at that time being the most powerful maritime country in the world, everyone else was forced to follow. Don't know if that was a bit of poetic licence on behalf of the program makers but it seems to ring true.
