    Has anyone tried Fire walking??

Once when I accidentally set fire to the cellar stairs at my granny's whilst having a sly smoke, ruined my wellingtons
When one door closes another one shuts, it must be the wind

Fire walking was a pretty cool pass time in Fiji. A shallow pit is filled with large smooth boulders, covered with firewood and set alight. After many hours when the rocks are scorching hot the ashes are raked away and the fire walking ceremony begins. But not before some water is splashed on the rocks to evaporate in hissing steam.

Fijian men and Fijian Indian men then walk across just as the photo Brian attached shows. I have photos/slides which I will scan and post later on. In fact, Mike Hall, I've been thinking, if it is appropriate would it in order to do a feature on the Pacific Islands in the Gallery and as I got a slide scanner for my birthday which I could put to good use. There are other shipmates too that would be able to contribute before they get lost in some bottom drawer.

Cappy, here is a picture postcard of a Lautoka scene taken about the time you were enjoying your stay there. Unfortunately, Charlie Stinson used the image anti copy system. I'm glad now that I threw him fully dressed into the swimming pool at a party in Suva.

Looking forward to report on Tahiti, Brian.

    Cheers,
    Richard

Sounds good to me, Cappy. Over the next couple of weeks I will be up-dating my website for the QI Oldies but will get on with some scanning. Don't know what it is but things seem to take longer than they used to!!

Meanwhile, here is a photo of Burns Philp Motor Dep't at Lautoka at the time you were there.
    Cheers,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
The trip we are planning includes calls at Miami/fFort Lauderdale, Costa Rica, Panama Canal. Equador, Callao/ Lima. Peru, Easter Island and Statues, Pitcairns Island, Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Pango Pango Samoa, Lautoka, Fiji, Noumea and Islle de Pines in New Caledonia and then to Sydney. On the `Amsterdam,` Holland America. next January and February. I have a few Polynesian mates in Tahiti and Moorea who are fantastic hosts and a good laugh.
We usually do somethying similar every year, this year fell in a heap.
    Cheers
    Brian
