Why would the cross of St Patrick be removed? He is the patron saint of Ireland, not just the Republic.

Wasn't that also the pages of the list of their war heros?
As-well as being flown on the focsle/head the Uinion Jack also has a white background surrounding along all sides. otherwise it is the Union flag.

oops! forgot about "all Ireland", but I also understand that there were 2 St Patricks, and places of birth include Scotland, Wales Glanavanta Roman Fort in Cumbria England. He or they, have quite an entry on Wikipaedia!
Tha patron saint of all Ireland, St. Patrick, is believed to have been a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity. He is reputed to have driven all the snakes from the land. But the snakes in question were not reptiles but a brotherhood of persons who reportedly proscecuted many of the local natives. So much myth about the country it is sometimes hard to find the truth.
