A few years back the UK gov added I believe 1GBP to the price of 'alcopops' in an effort to reduce binge drinking. My information source tells nme it did not stop the drinking but did increase gov revenue from the sale of drinks. Inaitaly sales dropped, but after about one year they actualy increased.
Here in Oz three years ago the same trick was tried. Alcopops went up by $1 a bottle, to combat binge drinking of course you understand said the gov. Initaly sales declined and the younger generation went onto drinking bottles of Vodka with mixers. Amazingly figures released today show thta sales of alcopops have increased and over the past three years the gov has garnered an additonal 2billion dollars from the additional tax.
But of course it was all done to stop binge drinking you understand.
Alcopops is an interesting formulation , tax on beer is applied at the brewery gate , by running so much beer through a reverse osmosis plant you can remove the alcohol , which you store , and the reduced strength beer when blended saves a fortune in duty . You are then left with a tank of alcohol . You load that into a tanker and take it for a trip to a factory where it is blended to form alcopops , It was Bacardi-Martini at Southampton , but not sure where it is done now . Read the labels , the Breezers are made by Bacardi not contains Bacardi . The strength of high volume beers has gone down over the years , It saves millions of pounds for the brewer
There is an old saying "You get what you pay for ",this could be said in the case of beer.It has always been said here that these cheap pubs selling under priced beer are buying beer past their sell by date or on their sell by date.I do believe they may get it near to their sell by date and know that they can move it before or by its sell by date. The John Smiths bitter at the Pen & Wig @ £2.25 was a great pint and good value for money.Yesterday I went with Lou over the water to his area where he was born and went in the pub on the corner of his street 2 pints of john Smiths seen the price £1.90 very good thought we.It was not a patch on the pint in the P&W and we were glad to get back this side of the water and to the P&W to get a decent pint.
Regards.
