Down the plug hole
I always believed that in the Northern Hemisphere water went down the plug hole in a clockwise direction whilst in the Southern Hemisphere it disappeared down the hole anti clockwise, however I have just read that this is an urban myth.

Down the plug hole
AAAHHH!!!I am soo disappointed about thisplug hole theory.
I have a queston though
I have a buddy that lives in Canada an he is from Liverpool and sailed as an engineer from 1958 until 1966 with various shipping companies in the UK. Is he or would he be entitled to a Merchant Navy Pension?
And where and how would go about finding out.
Thanks

John, you post something which you think maybe of interest and hope to get views on the matter but surely out of 41 hits you would think that somebody must have an opinion, view or answer to make the subject more interesting.I realise that some members are just readers but with something so simple as this they could try their hand and maybe come to be regular posters.

Hi Jim,
I had a discussion a while back regarding this topic with an engineer that I work with in Panama City. He went as far as to tell me that while in Ecuador once, he had this phenomenon shown to him. A resident friend demonstrated it by doing it at home and then driving to another location nearby to show the opposite happening. I haven't checked but does the Equator run through Ecuador? I'm sure that I heard once on the weather channel that the direction of the winds circling hurricanes, travel in opposite directions based on whether they are north or south of the Equator.
I'm sure that someone will come up with a definitive answer.

Down the plug hole.
Hi Duke,I know at one time at home whilst the sink was emptying I tried stirring it anti clockwise but it reverted into a clockwise direction. When our shipmates in the southern hemisphere wake up they can tell us what way it goes down under.

I think it is right, I have done it a few times the water flows round the same as the weather systems. wind and tides such as the Gulf Stream , that flows clockwise, The Trade winds blow clockwise across the North Atlantic..South of the Equator the Trade winds blow anticlockwise and the currents from the Benguila Current flows up from the Cape up the West Coast of Africa cross the Atlantic and down the South American Coast and back towards the Cape..
In between the two, North and South, you have the doldrums.
The old Windjammers knew this and used it to their advantage.
The same applies in the Pacific, North annd South.
Cheers

.
He should contact the Union, which at the time was MNAOA, then changed to NUMAST, now it is called NAUTILUS, in London.
Cheers
Brian.
