    Default I.P.A.

    Hi,
Just had a couple of pints of excellent N.Z. India Pale Ale,not being a great drinker of bottle beer in the UK.my memory is a bit dodgy, but if is working at well,IPA. was a clear beer. The beer I've just was cloudy as anything you like to name, mind you in Napier Scrumpy is sold that is clear as water, and Cornish Pasties are even the wrong shape never mind the ingredients!!!,moan for the day over, have a good one.

    Cheers,

    Len.

IPA or Indian Pale Ale is from memory a very clear beer. If it is cloudy then it may not be in the best of condition. NZ does an execellent Chardonay under the label Cloudy Bay, not mixed up by any chance?
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Default The demon drink

Hi shipmates, In my time had a few halfs of beer and a few pints now and again over the years, as one or two of us here have, Was I.P.A. a cheap way to make a strong beer the brewers would send it out as dunnage/ ballast fot tea trade in clipper ships to India and bring it back as quality beer so the story goes? Most home brew is cloudy unless you put fineings in the brew, the best beer is in bottles stops the landlords putting water in it Remember all drink is evil !!!!! not the drink the Price the landlord and tax the government make us pay. Much cheaper at the supermarket cheers

    Default IPA'

Definitely beer John, out of the pump,it is a S.Island brew, from Greymoutr, allof their beer is pretty good.

The Bar Manager who poured it for me is a home brew man big,he's trying to get some small wooden barrels that won't bankrupt him in freight charges.

    Cheers,

    Len.

    Hi,
Couldn't tell you about the WaikatoXXXX still being brewed,it isn't a Southern brewery, based in Hamilton I think ,just about a hours drive south of Auckland. In the late 60's, early 70's they put out a brew called Brew 66 from memory, talk about being crook next day,it was cronic,a kick like a mule, any Kiwwi's remember it?.

    Cheers,

    Len.

IPA was first successfully transported to Colonial India by Marstons. The brewing process involved a certain type of hops and malt and Burton spring water. After brewing, this ale took a longer amount of time to mature. It therefore survived the three months journey by sailing ship and arrived in first class condition. This is the story as Marstons tell it today.

If my memory holds up, "Worthintons IPA" used to come in bottles and when poured it had to be done very slowly thus leaving the sediment at the bottom of the bottle. It was a very strong ale/beer all this circa '60s.

The other one was Barley wine.
(and with the upmost apologies to the Ladies on this site)
we used to call it the 1 & 9penny leg openers, it used to cost 1 shilling & 9 pennys at the time.

White label Worthingto and Red label Bass were the two with the sediment.
