    Default Nice hotel in London

    Wife and I are looking to spend a week in London 1st.week in December.

    Can anyone recommend a reasonable hotel , browsing the internet not much help.
    Doesn't need to be too fancy as long as it's clean , tidy and a good breakfast - something
    along the lines of the old Merchant Navy hotel.

    Many thanks

    JC

    A very good friend of mine took a trip with Trafalgar tours a couple of years ago Hotel was in Kensington and in early November. He complained about the cold and asked why there was no heating on.
    'Sir heating will be put on 1st of December as we are obliged to opperate heating from then until 31st March.'
    He said it was so bloody cold and the blankest so thin they took the curtains off the windows to put on the bed.

    They should have sent up a Hot Barmaid to warm the bed.

    It's the same old story John ,isn't it? You get what you pay for,and today it's the easiest thing in the world to research your accommodation first on the internet before committing to pay for your booking. Never take for granted what a tour operator says-check everything out.One should read ALL of the reviews first then make your choice.

    Incidentally,I have never known an hotel where extra blankets are not available for the asking,or that have a rigid November to April Only Heating Policy. That sounds positively Dickensian !,or sounds like your friend's dodgy(perhaps) travel company was utilising some of London's DHSS Hotels !

    Let's face it though,Kensington,despite it's perceived 'upmarket' image amongst tourists is awfully seedy in parts and caters more for the casual unsophisticated bargain-basement tourist. If you want higher standards there are obviously the corporate hotel chains- at a higher price-but you get what you pay for. Then,if things are not to your liking,you have at least some recourse to compensation.I am partial to the Ibis Hotel chain.To me they are like the Holiday Inns,but without the high prices.

    I also think that Mr.Cassells might find it more difficult to find a good hotel,as I should imagine he would require smoking accommodation-very much a no-no in hotels everywhere these days-and that would limit his choice even more somewhat.

    Very True Gulliver, but this company, Trafalgar Tours rates highly with the travel agents. But they must give a lot of kick backs as I have heard other horror stories from people who have used them.
    I thougt that heating policy had long gone, but i am informed by family in UK that many places still adhere to it, keeps costs down.

    Remember the old annex to the 1966 coll. regs ;

    Assumptions made on scanty information are dangerous and should be avoided.
