Tony, do you have any recollection of a swimmer being killed by a speedboat, the sort that would take trippers round the pier and back?

Established in 1745, a unique, must-visit destination – the perfect mesh of history and modern life.

Before the beginning of the 19th century, the pub was called The Old Jerusalem, but the owners transferred the name and the story from the warehouse because it was too good and too famous a name to let die.

The original Dirty Dick, was Richard, or some say Nathanial, Bentley, a prosperous city merchant living in the middle of the 18th century, who owned a hardware shop and warehouse, and it said to be the inspiration for Miss Havisham in Dickens' Great Expectations.

Bentley had been quite a dandy in his youth, but following the death of is fiancée, he refused to clear up or clean anything.

    Default how old

Was not aware of a speedboat accident, hardly any boats to be seen now, a few at Thorpe Bay, from where the Gasworks Jetty was to Chalkwell station now about 20 Boats moored, thats about 4 miles, was over 1000 in 50,s and 60,s. The Council have demolished all the slipways and jetties so they dont have to repair them. so no facilities any more.

    Default The Roslin Beach Hotel:

Knew the Roslin Hotel, Thorpe Esplanade well on visits to Southend years ago, seems they have inherited a beach now ?

The hotel is located to the east of Southend town centre in the desirable locality of Thorpe Bay.

Something to eat? Join us with family or friends to enjoy panoramic views of the Thames Estuary in our AA Rosette Restaurant whilst tempting your palate with one of the delicious meals offered on our menus, or order alfresco on our fantastic terrace overlooking the sea.
