We have the gov do not call register which you can add your name to, it stops all th ephone calls as does going with a silent number.
But we now have do not knock stickers to put on your front door.
Works a traet, not seen the mother in law since i put it up.
Hi shipmates, The best way to stop them is Phone with a recording device = answer phone I bought one for £5 but not expensive to buy, I have on some days 10 to 20 calls but have no worries if you like what they say If they leave a message you can allway phone them back? most oversea call centre s wont bother to sell u rubbish, or con or scam you they dont like to be recorded !!! The boiler shops who try to sell you worthless shares are the worst I had 30 calls in one day? from one company but only a moron would buy any shares from them. so beware shipmates they are very clever and very good at getting people to part with money.
There was a knock at my front door when I answered it this guy grabbed me by the throat and was violently shaking me whilst shouting Ive been here 6 times already and got no answer, dont mess me around in future I will call once and I expect you tobe in and pay me the money!!!!!!Who are you I asked to which he replied "I'm from the Royal Liver Friendly Society"
Regards.

Yes ,I find that to be the best solution,Lou-an answer phone--most of us have one today.
Most cold callers will not leave a message after your recorded answer message kicks in. If they are genuine they will leave a message.(Hardly ever happens though) My family and friends know that as well. They will say “Hi this is (name) and say “ If you are there pick the phone up“- which I obviously will..If I am not there, then they will leave a message.
I take privacy very seriously and never answer a call with my name.Just a simple quizzical “Hello?”.If you say your name, then it confirms to them that they have the right person and will go ahead now or at a later date to contact you over something.
My number is also ex-directory,but not sure how effective that is -as occasionally a rogue caller used to get through.I think it may be something to do with an organisation calling a multiple block of phone numbers in succession in order to make contact. Those with answerphone reply or no reply will be skipped over, the ‘machine’ they use going onto the next number in a sequence..
I also opted in for the (free)Telephone Preference System. They say it takes about 3 months to kick in,but don’t know how effective it is.I don’t seem to get any though.
I also read the following to be aware of: If you enter a competition by telephone or also online, you have to provide your telephone number (in the unlikely event you win a prize!.)so they can contact you to tell you. They also provide a box to tick which is a condition of entry(otherwise they won’t enter you) which states something to the effect that you abide by terms and conditions.
What you don’t know,is that by ticking that box to accept their terms and conditions they will all(usually) pass on your telephone number to marketing organisations who pay for such details. True.
Other things I do.(I’m not paranoid ! Just very careful about security,)If I don’t want my number to be given to someone I’m calling(say a general enquiry to an organisation,)then dial 141 (in U.K.)before their number will withold it from them,so they can't call you back or pass it on to other organisations.
Similarly,if you wish to find out who called you ,you can dial 1471(In U.K.). and find out the last number who called. YouMore often than not you will get the annoying reply “The caller witheld their number “-just like you can do above by dialling 141 before you phone someone.
Guard your phone number closely
Being free of nuisance phone calls give me more time on my ‘pooter’ ! I can deal with ‘Spam’ O.K......and Doorstep Callers?'....I never answer them.! They can try next door !

In the UK there are currently 2 ways to try and avoid telephone cold calling. One is to register for the Telephone Preference Service which is free of charge and takes up to 28 days to activate. Their web site is HERE The 2nd way is to used Anonymous Caller Rejection which is chargeable and done through your service provider.
Both ways will cut out a percentage of nuisance calls but will not eliminate them completely. The challenge here is the value of these calls to the companies concerned. The 'cold calling' industry by telephone is worth £billions in revenue world wide. The simple reason is it's a numbers game (forgive the pun) For every 100 calls made one person will express an interest, whether genuinely or through gullibility. I spent 10 years in sales where we used call centres extensively. In our case the sole reason for cold calling was to try and get a 'foot in the door' for the sales rep. This is surprisingly easy to do, and a competent telephone operative will manage about 1 in 50. It is the sales rep's job then to convince the customer to buy and part with their money. A competent sales rep will convert an average of about 1 in 5 at first appointment. This can amount to a sale of many £000's in the case of double glazing. You may well wonder why these 'sales people' keep going in the face of so much rejection. That's simply a case of commission. A good tele-canvasser will earn £25K a year, a good door-canvasser will earn £35k and a sales rep will earn £50k+. (These figures are based on the double glazing industry in 2007 when I was a manager)
With such large incomes available you can see why so many of these companies will flout the law and over ride the TPS system. Complaints are rare and TPS themselves will only take action in extreme cases. Many of the more reputable companies decided to move their call centres abroad from 2000. The reason for this was threefold. No1 They are in a different time zone making evening calls easier, No2 the call centre staff only cost a fraction in wages and more importantly the rules of TPS do not apply. This is also the case with Anonymous Caller Rejection. Exchanges can only eliminate 'withheld numbers' They cannot eliminate International calls, which are incidentally computer generated hence cutting telephone call expenses.
Many wonder about the so called 'silent calls'. These occur all too frequently these days. In a call centre all of the outbound calls are done with an auto dialler. If a 'customer' does not pick up on the fourth ring, the dialler will simply dial the next number. In the event that the 'customer' picks up on the fifth ring, whilst the next call is being dialled, then the next person to pick up gets the 'silent call' because the canvasser is talking to the previous 'customer'
Don't be fooled into thinking that anything you do or say on the phone will deter these 'sales people'. You are just a statistic to them and once they have contacted you your number simply goes back into the melting pot to be called again, and again and again until such time as you eventually move, buy or die!
Caller display is the best aid to dealing with them. In our house we simply do not pick up the phone unless an actual number is displayed. Then if it is a company at least you can call them back and by speaking to a supervisor request your number is deleted from their database. A tip here is that when calling back you may only reach the call centre which is outbound calls only. In that event if you google the number you will very often be able to track down the originator's head office. Speak nicely to them and they will often co-operate.
Bye the way, for the initiated, if you have ever wondered where they get your number from that's simple too. They simply buy them. Banks, building societies and just about any other company you have ever willingly given your number to, especially online companies, will sell your number. Unless you specifically need that company to be able to contact you, give them a wrong number to put in their database. Let them sell that and some other mug get hassled with the calls.
MAILING PREFERENCE SERVICE.; TELEPHONE PREFERENCE DERVICE. both of these are excellent.
i get no junk mail at all and about one phone call in six months. i have a notice on the front door and get no pizza or other adverts.
Get them on the phone now and again mostly my wife answers the phone as i have trouble sometimes with my earing aid but on one occasion i answered the and the voice told me that i was having trouble with my computor i could pick the voice was Indian so ask him if he could speak louder then ask him if he comes from Bombay down goes the phone no rings since
So tell me Alf, what happens when you phone for a pizza to be delivered??
The other thing we have here in Oz is premium calling. That is calls to you mobile by the phone company. All are averst and you get charged 25 cents a pop. But you can have them blocked if you know about them.
