Default Nautical Trivia ~ Fish Poo

For those who dream of sitting on the crisp white sands of a Caribbean Island sipping rum punch, watching the bikini clad (or unclad) beauties frolicking in the surf here is an essential piece of nautical trivia. That lovely white sand is predominantly fish poo. The Parrotfishes' diet, consists primarily of algae extracted from chunks of coral ripped from a reef. The coral is pulverized with grinding teeth in the fishes’ throats in order to get to the algae-filled polyps inside. Much of the sand in the parrot fish's range is actually the ground-up, undigested coral they excrete. According to some sources an adult parrotfish , which grows to around 4 feet, can excrete up to a tonne of sand per year.

Another interesting fact about this particular fish is that some male parrot fish maintain harems of females. If the dominant male dies, one of the females will change gender and color and become the dominant male.

    Default Fish Poo

Very interesting Tony, but I for one wish I was sitting on a load of s--t sipping a rum punch watching scantily clad or unclad beauties rather than watching all this bluddy rain outside my windows, boo! hoo!

I hope you dont want to sit on some uk beaches, what with raw sewage pumped into the sea when the plant sewers overflow. the smell is awfull. And I thought the UK was a first world country.

Talk about poo, certain beaches in cornwall may stop people from using them, there are petitions from "surfers against sewage" doing the rounds as well, something should be done about this. its disgusting.
