The playhouse in Durban definately had a Roof!
The Del Monico in Cape Town had the Ceiling of Stars but the roof was there as well!

Remember it, how could I forget? Got thrown out of there not once, not twice but thrice. They concluded that I had no sence of decorum when just the slightest bit inebriated, I concluded they had no sence of humour. 'Sir you must drink from the glass not the bottle, it looks unsightly'
'Listen mate just think how much washing up I am saving you"
The bloody sidewalk out there was so hard!

Celling and stars, mate you did not need a celling to see the stars, a dozen brandy squares and you could see the universe.

The one I often frequented was the Manchester Hotel, not far from the Grand. Had a great restaurant on ther first floor the food was very good and the waiters very friendly and obliging. Got me out of trouble on a couple of occasions.

hi E M. spent my 21st birthday in the bar of the playhouse. it had a roof and the interior was of stars, including a cloud or two.picked up a nice young lady in there. treated myself to a very old napoleon brandy which cost, i think about five bob;.
a bottle of cheap brandy cost about the same at the time.
