I remember the five bob piece and think I still may have it. Everest was conquered at the same time as the coronation by Tensing and Hillary. Later in the year the queen made a car ride along the streets by our school aand we all had to attend. Our teacher Miss Buchanan from Queensland said we should all bow as the car went by. Well she did, and was the only one of the thousands there.
I was 13 and stood with my mum in Regent Street to watch the royal procession, I had a 3D viewer and its a day I will never forget, what lovely memories.
Checked my diary we were steaming up the Persian Gulf were due Mena Al Amadi next day.
You would'nt have liked it in Hungnam or Chungjin :cool:
I was twelve at that time,no TV in SA so we were all crouched next to the old Radio we had then,listening to the Shortwave ,in 1952 ! and the Death of the King!
A sad moment,and there were i can tell you lots of Tears around our House!
Then in 1953 at thirteen,again around that same old Radio,listening to all the pomp and ceromony ,on the new Queens Coronation!
At least this time the Tears were of Joy!

PS Alf now thinking back on that Year i am sure we at School also received a Coin of some sort,as we were also still in the old Currency rate of Pounds Shillings and Pence!
For Jim ,yes indeed Jim She became Queen in 1952,but has to wait ill 53 as that was the way the Royal Household stood on the Death of the King!

TV in Uk was still a bit young at that time. There were a few radio shops that had the new TV and on Coranation day some put a TV in the window so the people could stand in the rain to watch. Me, I was too smart for that watched on the Tv of the lady next door, she was posh enough to own one
my brother, who was a technical wizard, sent away for the parts and built us a tv in 1949/50. It was only a tube about 14" with no trimmings (box) and the colour was black and green. But what a treat, we were the first family in Ryde to own one, everyone came to visit to watch. I watched Muffin the Mule and joined the Ovaltinies club. I was very popular at school lol. Nowdays I have widescreen HD, cant compare haha.
I was 21, had paid off the "Gothic" in Liverpool on 19 May, 1952 on return from Mombasa, Australia, New Zealand, Panama, Curacao (the aborted Royal Tour). Due to sign back on again on 11th June to bring Gothic to London on a run before sailing on her on 25th June for New Zealand. I was staying at the Merchant Navy Hotel in Lancaster Gate, London not very successfully doing a line with a nice looking member of the staff.
That pile of chips at "Southend on mud" - as my Cockney father used to say - set my mouth a-drooling. Cor! I am imagining cod and skate in crispy batter to go with them.
It's 11 pm down under and I am off to bed to dream - not of the lass at Lancaster Gate but those loverly fish and chips.
