It seems it doesn’t matter which branch of the Navy one was in, high office was open to them all. For example Lord Louis Mountbatten came up through the communications branch and finished up as Admiral of the Fleet. Maybe your sister today could have also attained such Des. Was that your sister or the warspite never firing a shot in anger or maybe both ? Cheers JS.
Hi Ivan, I couldn't agree with you more but surely we're used to being whitewashed from history. My local newspaper had articles on "D" Day but again no mention of the M.N. I had to write a comment to the editor over this omission.

I have mentioned this before but can't remember where or when but its well worth a look. "Omaha Beach", the American landing site on D,Day that turned out to be a disaster and was imortalalized in the movie "Saving Private Ryan".Quote:

No doubt the decision to enact D day came with a number of 'maybes'.
such were conditions then that there would have been a degree of influences such as weather conditions.
All taken into account but as we know plans can go awry, weather being one of the biggest problems.
But overall it did what was required, yes loss of life, but any war has that.
We must be very thankful that these men and women from a number of countries put their life on the line for us.
Big pity, no, or very little mention of MN in this big day, as I am sure if there were refueling ships they would have been MN crewed.
I watch a show called Tipping point, and it stuns me to listen to the stupid answers people give to questions, and am so relieved when an older person comes on and knows what is what from years previous. It is now a show in Aus and my wife shuts it off at times she is so sick of the lack of; not highly questionable questions but simple ones. I had a very poor education but people today take the cake. AS my wife keeps saying if not for those men in the second world war we would have been all speaking German.

Convinced they chose the most dumb candidates they can, give away less money.
But as a young lad only a few years ago we were taught about both wars along with many others such as the relationship between UK and France, not the best.
But sadly now most students get heir info and learning from either Fake Book or Mr. Google.
Even worse is Wikipedia all od which can produce what ever they think will sell copy.
There are books in libraries and book shops with the facts in them, but I feel sorry for the younger ones who do not understand it all.
Maybe in 20 pr so years when another major conflict takes place they may come to understand, bit late then though.
I didn't have a great education, mainly due to being fick. But, when it came to history, we learned about all the wars, right back to 1066. It was probably the main subject in the history lessons.
I agree about the technological things kids have today, a made up event, or false facts, can be put on the internet in seconds, and the kids can use their thumbs to find it all. Whereas, we had to use our heads.
#27 As to a poor education Des , I believe there were only two choices with different outcomes during most of those posters on this site , if had a background of sufficient family funds then it was through the education system and through the eyes of the scholistic tutors and their worldly approach they themselves had gone through. Or like the main multitude of the population leave school at 15 and really start your education from scratch having a modest knowledge of the three Rs.Your tutors being more attuned to worldly events and practical answers. Actual brain power had little to do with anything. Cheers JS
