Default the ‘Children’s Ship’ City of Benares.

    17th September.

The Second World War saw the loss of many vessels and lives at sea but perhaps none
so haunting as the ‘Children’s Ship’ City of Benares.

Torpedoed in the North Atlantic, more than 600 miles from land, with 90 evacuee children
on board, 2020 marked the 80th anniversary of her sinking with deplorable loss of life.

Default Re: the ‘Children’s Ship’ City of Benares.

On 17 September 1940 a German U-boat sank the City of Benares. Eighty-one child evacuees died.

"It is one of those stories that never fades in the retelling and is a stark reminder to all of us of those dark days of the Second World War when terrible things happened to men, women and children."

VS of the survivors from the "City of Benares"" leave their rescue ship at a British port. Lots of the survivors are children who wave at the camera. Some are wearing sailors hats from the ships which rescued them.
