09 January 1941, Convoy SL-60 in the Western Approaches was expecting the arrival of its local escort. That morning the ocean escort HMS ESPERANCE BAY and en-route local escort HMS WILD SWAN were diverted to pick up survivors from the merchant ship CLYNTONEOUS that was bombed and sunk on the 8th.

Another escort due to join the convoy, the ocean boarding vessel HMS CAVINA sighted a U-boat that morning and was instructed by not to proceed to the convoy in case it was followed.
