    Default 9/11

After attending a wedding, my then partner and I decided to take the long route home,
a few days at Torquay for the ceremony etc, headed along the south coast towards Lands
End, the North coast on the way home. To cut a short story long, stopped over night often
but, though saw and did much were homeward bound.

Our last planned stop was Glastonbury possibly the quirkiest town in England. Steeped in
history, myth and the smell of incense. Glastonbury far removed from Whitby up North
that has Dracula and Goth's, has an air and history of King Arthur, pilgrims, hippies and
    peace and tranquility.

Back to keeping a short story long, before leaving we popped into a pub, her indoors was
driving so a beer and coffee. First impressions of the boozer was a sense of silence and few
people, odd a tourist type place. A large room on once side was packed with a large TV
screen on the wall, it seemed to have a Rambo type movie on, the type with fire and
    destruction etc.

Initial thought, pos it was some kind of pub action film cinema - type event / club etc.

Then the news filtered through - the silence, was more shock and horror than shock
and awe. You would never expect in a place of such peace and tranquility what was
    occurring.

On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C.

Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Cutting a short story long, we will remember them.

    Keith.

We were due to fly home from Florida on that day. The first we heard about it was when on leaving our holiday villa accommodation, we stopped off for breakfast on our way to the airport and the t.v. in the restaurant was showing live pictures of the event. All flights out were cancelled and when it was found that the terrorists had trained in Florida then the whole state was in a state of shock. For 4 days we were put up in a hotel by our travel company before flights started up again. We were actually on the first European bound flight out and flew initially from Sanford to Bangor Maine where we landed to clear customs and immigration. The whole time we were in American air space we were flying at around 20000 feet and under escort by American fighter jets who apparently were under orders to shoot us down if we deviated from our flight path in anyway.
Frightening way to end a fantastic holiday.

#2 You were lucky. Have been watching a program on TV about George W Bush at that time. He gave the order to do just that action with the 4th plane if they didn't respond to being contacted. Unfortunately that was the plane that was brought down by the passengers. Very scary times with terrible consequences. Not much better all these years later....when will we ever learn.

Very interesting and informative program that one about George W.
But yes there is no end to terrorism in its many forms.
But one way or another it has been going oin since man first walked upon the face f this planet, and somehow I doubt it ever will.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
