Default Re: Commemoration of the Empress of Ireland

On 28 May 1914 the Empress of Ireland left Quebec, bound for Liverpool. However tragedy struck in the early hours of 29 May, when the liner collided with another ship in thick fog. The liner sank in less than 15 minutes with the loss of more then 1,000 lives.

The loss of the 'Forgotten Empress' has always been overshadowed by the Titanic and Lusitania disasters. However, more passengers died on the Empress than on either of the other ships. 172 crew, mainly from the Liverpool area, also lost their lives.
