Just watched a ceremony to mark the 75th. anniversary of the bombing of Darwin when 11 ships were sunk in the harbour and many MN crews were killed.

If you ever visit Darwin, they all have graves at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, the only one on Australian soil.

Very moving event with gunners in singlets firing blanks and navy ship with heavy machine gun blazing away and a RAAF fly past.

Sorry we missed Singapore last week.

Hi Keith.
Being Darwin was a long way off from the majority of the people of Australia; the Gov't hid the extent of the damage not to panic them, bullshit of course, pig iron Bob would have been the one to panic after selling the Japs the pig iron the Japs were dropping on Darwin, as most people had opposed it, they knew there would be trouble from the Japs. And to think they let the Jap PM address Parliament a few months ago with that anniversary coming up.

I went to the Adelaide River War Cemetery, just 12 months ago. February 2016. on my way to Humpty Doo and then down the Stuart Highway to the Adelaide river cruise with the Jumping Crocodiles, and three years ago also in February, I went to the big Kranji War Memorial Cemetery in Singapore.
Another impressive one was the War Graves Cemetery in Manila, that seemed to go on forever.
So many graves of millions of young men and women around he world, very sad , and for what?

Update:

Today marks 75 years since the bombing of Darwin, Australia during WWII. While not widely known about, the attack was more savage than Pearl Harbor: more bombs fell on Darwin.

Was in Darwin on the WA State coaster Koolinda in December 1948. Was surprised at the amount of evidence of the attack. Bank of NSW facade peppered by strafing. There was quite a lot of marine action and sinkings down the East Coast too and was not broadcast. Pics 1 and 2 include Darwin evacuations whilst 3 shows her at low tide in Broome WA in December 1948.

The bombing od Darwin, unlike the Anzac battle at Galipoli does not get the same amount of recognition as do some other events of WW2.
It is only because of the 75th that many are aware of what occurred at that time.

Hi Richard , what a devastating video of Darwin after the Cyclone, I was in Darwin just 12 months ago and it is now a beautiful City.

It is amazing how the population rallied together to clear up the devastation and rebuild .
