THIS MONTH IN HISTORY
18 March 1915 A combined British and French fleet fail in their attempt to force the Dardanelles. During the Battle of Canakkale, the Formidable Class Battleship HMS IRRESISTIBLE is critically damaged and later sinks (New Zealander Leading Stoker William Burrows, the son of Ma Burrows – mother of the Navy – is killed). HMS OCEAN, a Canopus Class Battleship, which is sent to rescue IRRESISTIBLE, is also sunk, as is the French battleship BOUVET. The battlecruiser HMS INFLEXIBLE and the French battleship GAULOIS are damaged. All ships were mined and fired upon by shore batteries.
