i think one of my longest was rio to gydiina poland. we caught a wrong wave as we left rio which floosded the stores. ruined the flour which the idiot chief steward used to try and stop water flooding into the cabins. the crew had previously thrown most of the spuds over the wall because of him. we lived on ships biscuit among other things, wafers and what we could thieve from tinned stores.we had two xmas turkeys which were rotten. we were carrying iron ore and she rolled like a b***stard we anchored out at falmouth then went through the kiel canal to gydinia but the chief refused to buy any stores. it seemed to take months.
the whole trip took from october to march. alf
What happened Alf? Did you do the trip twice?
Uk to Shanghai 32 days but we did slow down a bit at Suez, Cheers Albi
When I was on the Oil Tanker Kayson it had been fitted with a new bottom section, we sailed through the suez empty and went up the gulf and picked up oil...but we now to deep to go back to through the canal so we went around Africa.. six weeks, no mail, no films, no booze. no nothing.
The Captain put the deck crew on five days..no Sat or Sunday at sea, we docked in Liverpool and took the train to Euston. Me and a mate knew that when the rest of the crew on the train had a few drinks there would be trouble. So my mate John an myself got a few beers and sat alone at the front of the train.
Well the crew wrecked the buffet bar and Police were waiting at Euston.
I was Engineer Steward and got overtime doing the laundry, the deck and Engine room crew were great guys but stressed out and it showed.

I can't remember the longest time at sea while going deep sea, but the 800 ton coaster Ben Varrey once took 37 hours to get from the Isle of Man to Garston, light ship in south east gale, that was a memorable voyage, in fine weather it took about 7 hours.
Phil Crawley.
I was just reading the posts about going round the Cape. It was not nice either especially if your ship had a nice green Saudi flag flying on it.
I took one to scrap with a nice green Saudi flag the VLCC Sipca Makkah (Ex Texaco Norway with British Crew). Saudi International Petroleum. It really filled me with pride in the Merchant Navy. Went to scrap with no crew. Not nice.
I dont think I had better say any more or I will get arrested.

Ropner's Appleby with iron ore. Sixty-five days slow run from Port Hedland, Australia to Taranto. Italy, the long way around the Cape of Good Hope and then anchored off for a further week, no liberty boat ashore.
departed liverpool february 1964 into a sw gale made south about ireland and came to a virtual standstill in the face of hurricanes. took 5 days to clear ireland. The cunarder 'sylvania' passed us on the 5th day and made for halifax for storm damage repairs. she passed us again on day 28 leaving halifax as we entered, and she had been there 10 days! normal journey time of 10 days. left halifax bound baie comeau and broke ice in the gulf of st lawrence for another 11 days. not the sort of weather any of us went to sea for in the first place!
