    Default customs at Dover

I remember in 77/78 coming back from a motorcycle trip to Amsterdam getting off the early morning ferry, after an all night ride, being stopped by customs and asked where I was coming from, like an idiot instead of saying Paris, Brussels, or Utrecht I said Amsterdam, so it was empty your pockets. at that time I rolled my own cigarettes so as soon as they saw the rolling papers the search was on for the drugs from Amsterdam. I was exhausted by the time I had stripped off boots, rain gear, leathers, long johns, sweater, shirt and tee-shirt. I was just about to take my shredies off when they stopped me, I think the sight was too much for them seeing me stood with all my gear around my spindley ankles. They were most likely rolling around on the floor after I left. I guess it started their day off with a laugh. I would take bets that after a long weekend in Holland all I had left was 2 quid and 1/2 oz of drum.

    Cool Illegal Plonk

    Hi All.
We were running between Australia and Korea carrying troops.
This was a "dry" ship for Australian troops, but we used to buy
bottles of cheap Dr.Penfolds wine at about a £1.00 per bottle
and they were more than glad enough to pay £5.00 per bottle.
Bought a watch for the girlfriend(now the wife),took the strap
off ,put on my tie with a large Windsor knot, put the watch
into the knot, and she still wears it on special occasions. Its
about fifty years old by now.

    Default Customs

Unrolling a canvas fire hose putting cigarettes in the inner end of hose and reroll the hose, also take a wire spring off the reel put the cigarettes or tobacco inside the reel before reeling the wire.

Hey Lads, anybody remember having a set of steps on board for the bottom of the gangway to prevent it fouling bollards? I think it was on Somerset ,we lined it with plastic, filled it with fags, put a bottom on it,painted it and slid it around on deck for a few days, when we docked at KG5,we told the custom guys to hang on and we would bring them some steps!!A few days later we took the bottom off and split up the contents
    all the best,
    Ian

Comeing back from a trip to Holland to my home port ,had far too many ciggs and cigars, rolling tabbaco and other stuff , soon as we docked I phone, for a taxi straight home with suitcase full, back in a hour for customs still had loads in cabin Which they found and took, B------had only to pay a fine {a pint of larger} for each of them in the bar? as I said nice people the customs.
