Re: Happy chinese new year
#7 one Chinese crewed ship I was on Tony was the ex Irish Elm a steamer burning Bunker C . Due to the death of the Cheng in Singapore and rearrangement of engine room staff , we finished up with and Indian chief and second engineer, the 3 rd engineer was the ships ex fireman’s cook, very adaptable the Chinese ! The bridge was Irish master me as mate , no second mate he jumped in the Kiel Canal and Chinese third mate, and an Irish R/0. Every one else Chinese. The deck and engine room spoke different lingo’s therefore also ate different food and from different parts of China. If you haven’t lived with the H.K. System ones maritime knowledge is somewhat lacking , but it was good for the shipowner I suppose . One never shouted at a Chinaman and cause him to loose face, if he did you might as well disregard him as any use to the vessel. Cheers Campai JS.
Re: Happy chinese new year
Hong Kong Chinese great crew and loyal, generous to a fault. Mainland Chinese the most dangerous and arrogant assholes I ever met. Best I ever witnessed was in Trinidad. BP were training Chinese nationals up for LNG carriers they were building. The wee shite I had thought he was something special. On the manifold he fell foul of a nice big Trini lad I had known for years. Going alongside the China was supposed to be giving information as to ships position distance to contact and when in position etc!!. He was failing to give the info so I took the radio off him, china man not happy.
Anyway the shore lads get onboard to start connect the Chiksans we all shake hands The Trini guy I was friendly offered to shake hands with the China man. He looked at the Trini spat at his feet and went to walk away. Big mistake the Trini lad took exception and gave the Chinaman a boxing lesson. When I was asked by the oldman what happened I suggest the China had used the N word he was on a flight back to Shanghia the next day.

I agree, my experience with HK Chinese was very good; my last trip with them was on LNG, and as I was unable to go ashore in Japan while I was doing a stint as cargo engineer, the CPO would chaperone my wife, He would turn up at my cabin dressed in suit collar and tie, with a raincoat folded over his arm and take her where ever he thought would be of interest for her (first trip). He was usually assisted by one of the other PO's. Perfect gentlemen and good guys to sail with.
