I don’t know why they were there ,but you are correct it moved round to Faslane , maybe prior to the Base being Built.There were also Subs based in the Holy Loch , American after that time . Maybe some connection to HMS Maidstone verifying suitability of the area for submarine operations . Maybe some ex Rodney members could cast a light .

I am guessing, but probably the Gareloch is deep water; in my last job I was involved in some fairly big projects at Finnart on Loch Long which is the next Loch over from Gareloch.
BP used it as it could take VLCCs without the need to lighten. There was significant storage on site and the crude was pumped from there to Grangemouth refinery. I believe that these days it is mainly used for export of white oils.
