Many years ago I actually had an interview with blue funnel to go to sea with them as a deck cadet, or midshipman as they called their cadets. The guy who was interviewing me pointed to a picture of one of the P class, saying that not all the fleet was as modern as that but all their ships were "viable" units and as such I would be expected to share accommodation with a number of others and did I have any homosexual tendencies.
Never went any further with them as two days later I was joining my first ship as a Canadian Pacific cadet.
I did get a letter from blue funnel offering me a job with them which I replied to turning them down as I already had a job as cadet.
I got a very snotty letter back from them basically saying that as I had turned down the opportunity to join the premier British shipping company ( a theme that had run through the whole interview), should I ever applied to join them at a later date I would be refused.

From an engineers point of view probably the ED/ M boat . The old A boat will have had a double acting opposed B&W interesting to wathc going up and down , very labour intensive. the Super P depending were she was built likely a B&W rocker valve rubbish or a Sulzer that never learnt how to breath, nothing but turbo surge, would frighten the life out of you if you were standing beside it.The Memnon had a Sulzer 7RND76M which would have run as well as a Singapore ROLEX watch.

Is there any particular reason why all Blue Funnel ships had large funnels?
In my opinion funnels always spoiled the look of the ships.

To keep Alfred Holt happy. Apparently he was supposed to have said Keep my funnels tall and Blue and keep my Chinese happy to !!!!.
A lot of the old liner companies had very distinctive funnels Blue Star line being one.

From memory Blus Star was as bad as UCL for 'those' types.
On the Uruguay you spent a lot of time with your back to the bulkhead for safety.
