Only been to Dakar once and hat was to unload a cargo of oranges from S.A.
We weren't allowed shore as we would only be there for a few hours.
From what I can remember it was a fairly busy port.
First visitor after the officials departed was the usual Russian seaman wanting to borrow hour films.

No James Bond movies then Vic, as they are normally 135 minutes!

Prior the wall coming down I was working in Ethiopia and one of my team had an accident, there was a Soviet ship in port, Soviet vssls invariably carry doctors, I added visk to my family name, christian name okay, gave my card to commissar, the Captain welcomed me aboard, gave my team member medical attention and the Captain and myself spent a couple of hours swapping stories, sipping Black Label and listening to Glen Miller.. He thought the 'visk' addition was hilarious, pity world leaders cannot get on as well as seamen do regardless of nationality

One thing I found in my favour when in a foreign port, the fact that I had no money.
