    Default Lundy Island

Not so much the Island bit , but the name. Having sailed on a ship with Irishmen of both denominations and both from the Republic and being the meat in the sandwich and not being interested at the time. I was subject to two opinions, and was lead to believe that the name was well known for obscure reasons which at the time made absolutely no sense to me. But have always thought it was much known in the Republic. However as no reply to the query will settle in my mind it was just a lot of hostility for hostility’s sake and assume it is another figment of others imaginations. There are enough Irishmen on the site to know a lot better on Irish history than me , and a no comment is good enough for me and I can also forget the incidents . Cheers JS .

I thought I wasn’t imagining the hatred that I saw between 2 people one actually was named as such so must have been a great great great grandson as this was 1969. One of the persons may still be alive so will let sleeping dogs lie. Cheers JS
PS just one query before I shut up . The person mentioned sometime previous to 1969 had been skipper on an Irish scoot which had been either in collision or ran aground with I believe loss of life , have you any recollection of this occurrence in Irish maritime recent history. ? JS....

Was not Lundy one of the regions mentioned in weather forecasts?

Maybe Paddy needed to know if he should tale his wellies with him.

Others if you can remember are Sole, Fasnet, Shannon, Rockall , Bailey, Malin, Hebrides , Faroes, Fairisle, SE Iceland , ( Ivan’s favourite) Viking , Forties .Dogger, Cromarty, and plenty more .

All names listened to avidly in the coasting and trawler trade, the Force number telling you that you had no chance of making the next tide and were in for another night of imitating an astronaut, not so much floating in space but being tossed into it, not that we knew what an astronaut was in those days

John. One of the things I can clearly remember. Being on the bridge around midnight listening to the Shipping Forecast. Starting with general synopsis, usually a depression slow moving over S.E. Iceland then all the other areas clock-wise. wind speed variable and precipitation seemed the norm. If I remember correctly followed by the Inshore Forecast names like Galloper, Royal Sovereign and Portland Bill.
