What did they call it "misspent youth" hanging around the Billiard Saloons. In our local one eight tables, two good ones for the local " Sharks" and the others of varying condition. Prices from 1/- per hour to 6d half an hour and 3d for quarter an hour. You learned to finish a game in 15 minutes or the lights went out.
I think I have mentioned this before, my first trip to sea on an oil tanker. In the smoke-room they asked if I wanted to play a game of snooker (at sea) O.K. a green board 6ft x 3ft. marked off as normal six pockets, hard rubber cushions and coloured discs as balls only six reds was setup. Once I got the hang of it I played rather well but made the mistake of beating the Ch/Eng. and was given field days for my pains!

Started playing Snooker in my early days in Cape Town around the traps, many Sharks around then but learnt the hard way.
Then went to Sea and played a lot in Southampton's Mission to Seaman , they had a few Tables that were quite good, and the Cues were Straight LOL/
Then also played in and around London, and in Birmingham, that is where i learnt a lot more, with a chap i befriended called Dudley, he was one tough customer and was known around there as the Hitman!
So won a few more after his coaching which was terrific.
Played for quite some time after that, but eventually gave it away as my Peepers were not the same.
I still have my Cue its i the case i bought in in, i will take a Pic of it and Post later
    Cheers

    Ah! those days of memories!!

Think it may of been Sheffield in Tasmania anyhow some place on the east side Tas. In a pub they had in the 90s the biggest billiard table in the Southern Hemisphere. Maybe the members who live in Tasmania know about this. ? JS

Vernon, the cues were straight in Southampton, about the only things that were. LOL

As a young lad my dad got hold of a full size table, do not recall how he got it up three flights of stairs.
But all he brought with it was billiard balls.

Got quite good at playing with them, but now it is all Pool, very little Snooker here in Oz.
Though in Melbourne general cemetery there is a rave with two cues on it, well known Billiard player of his days
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.
