Same experience myself John, brought one giraffe, from the Med to think it was Bremen or Hamburg, in an open sided box, coming off the 12-4 and walking down the aft deck, forgetting it was there, and it would nuzzle your neck as you went by, frighten the crap right out of you. As i recall we ran out of spuds, as everyone was feeding it spuds form the spud locker, . Also remember we picked up a stray on the same ship, and the skipper demanded it was put ashore, took several ports to achieve that, as someone always nipped ashore and brought it back. This pet when came aboard was starving, by the time it was put ashore it would only eat beef !!!. The skipper put the 3rd mate on the gangway to prevent it being brought back, and as we pulled away, the pup was running along the jetty and whimpering, many wet eyes that day, kt

Not dogs but horses ,used to carry Carriage Horses from Montreal and Halifax to Bermuda with no handler. I was as chief officer responsible for in 1967. Was issued with a humane killer and received handling bonus for . Would have dreaded having to put a bolt in a horses head , but the occasion never arose. The 2nd. mate on the other hand was responsible for HM mail which was a sackable offence if overcarried , I preferred the horses. JS

During a spell of rough weather the 3rd Eng. decided to bring the wee dog into his cabin out of the wind and rain. When the dog craped on his carpet, end of goodwill back in it's kennel.
Photo of myself with said dog.
Gees Bill, with that look on your face hope you had plenty of food on board.

Vernon , you say UCL never carried animals.

Well mater let me tell you about a couple we had.

A second steward who was nothing but a dog the way he treated some wingers.

A chef who though nothing of throwing a roasting tray at the assistant cook on the roast corner.

Or the chef who thought it was great fun to have pork cut up in the small kosher section of the main gallet.

Animals would not behave in that ,manner.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
