    VIA: Royal Navy

As we continue to pay our respects to His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in this period of official mourning, we have selected some images spanning his 80-year association with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines for a memorial gallery.

A Personalised Stamp/Cover will be issued tomorrow in memory of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh.

The cover shows a photo of Prince Philip while he was in Malta serving in the Royal Navy. Prince Philip and the then Princess Elizabeth lived in Malta during their first years of marriage.

I feel sure that many folks have met Prince Philip and I can recall him visiting the College in Plymouth in 1970/71. He was there to open the new cadet accommodation block at Portland square.
Being rather shorter than most, I did not fit in for Guard of honour duties and was detailed, along with one other whose name I forget, to open various doors for the official party. It went as follows; Stand to attention, Open the door, salute, party moves through, close the door and then leg it via a different route to another location and repeat the process. On passing the very last door, Prince Philip stopped and stared at me and said "Haven't I seen you before lad?"
"Yes Sir, I've been opening various doors for you".
"How do you get ahead of me then? He enquired.
"Via different routes Sir" was my answer.
"Well how bloody stupid is that, come walk with me" he said, ushering me alongside him .
Hard to say no, so I did and was so nervous that I completely forgot what else he might have said - Fortunately we were only 20 yards from his car and the Polytechnic management / official party was only relegated to onlookers for a very short time. He got into the car and gave me a thumbs up and a huge smile.
The Great and the Good were not impressed.

Not sure if this is true but heard he at one time visited the Vindi.
A winger on the Pretoria told me this, said he was there??

Asked a cadet how he was liking it and what did he think of the school.

About one star sir he replied.

Well once you get to see there will be many more for you to see.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
