Re: Rounding the Horn
#13. John, when I read your transcripts of her diaries the mention of Aberdeen sailing ships caught my attention. I have done some local research into her family the JARDALLA'S. It is not a local name so easy to find in the records. The census for 1851 show a Joseph Jardalla Seaman 36 born England married to Isabella 34 born Aberdeen and Joseph 9 scholar born Aberdeen this was the girls father. I have gathered a lot of information on the family but have still to process it.

Re: Rounding the Horn
#14. Bill, as far as I know the family in question were from Liverpool. There were 4? Sisters, no brothers. The family home was in Crosby, full of heavy Victorian style furniture. 3 of the sisters lived in a mill cottage near the house I grew up in in the lake District and when the last remaining of those 3 got too old my mother took her in to live with us and that was how I came into possession of the diary.

Re: Rounding the Horn
#14 Thanks for your reply John. The daughters were probably born in the Liverpool area but Joseph Jardalla was born in Aberdeen and his wife Isobell Main Allen came from Orkney where they were married in 1874. As I said I haven't processed all the information I have into some order. Most of my info. comes from Scottish Records but I did look into the English Records in FIND MY PAST and found this list.

I have been round Cape Horn three times, once on the URMSTON GRANGE 1958
and again in 2006 on the QM2 from Miami to Los Angeles cruise. and again in 2009 on the MINERVA, on our way from Punta Arenas and Ushuaia to the Antarctic Continent
Anne has been round Twice,
Each time the sea was fairly calm

Bill, that must be the same family as the sister who lived with us always wanted to visit the Shetlands.
It was Isabella Jane who lived with us, though I'm not sure about her death year but must have been in the 70's.
Foolishly I only saw and thought of her as the old lady with Victorian attitude who lived with us, if only I had seen that diary earlier I would have questioned her more about that voyage.
Inside the diary are a number of her letters home when she was on a tour of Europe in the 1890's?
