Re: Rounding the Horn
Went round on the Icenic in 72, from Kiwi to some where in Argentina ( can't remember where). Did get caught in some heavy seas, lost a couple of winch houses off the focsle. Nice to say that you have been around both capes in one trip as we had discharged in Aussie before loading in Kiwi.

I have the diary of a 17 year old girl who sailed with her father on his ship in1872, from Swansea to San Francisco, the ship was a sailing vessel and according to her diary it took them 14 days plus to round the cape horn.

I am currently reading the actual handwritten notes of a seaman serving on the sailing ship 'John Stevenson' of Whitby in 1887, sailing on the 19th January 1887 from Burntisland with a cargo of coal for Savona and returning in June the same year after trading within the Mediterranean. Very interesting but is so fragile I look forward to returning it to its owner shortly.
