As a child I remember the ferries carried cars across and i used to look down through the grating in deck and watch the firemen down below shoveling coal. My first taste of engine rooms.

I remember those trips across from Wallasey in the old days ."Ferry Across the Mersey" reminds me , that I had a school mate, all through school, Les McGuire was his name, he was the piano player in the group "Gerry and the Pacemakers"
I remember going to Liverpool one morning back in I think 1960, and I met Les on the boat, had not seen him for a few years. He worked at Rushworth & Drapers in Liverpool, he said "Geoff" I am going for an interview next week for a rock band,
If I get the job, I am going to Hamburg, he got the job!!! . The next time I saw him was on American TV on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York, in I think 1964. I was sailing in and out of New York, every two weeks on the YANKEE COAST. We happened to be in New York on that Sunday night, and we had a TV onboard. Sailing on the YANKEE COAST we got the MN North American bonus of twelve pounds a month, if you were out for more than three months, we were there for six months at a time, on the NICOLAS BOWATER, Great Company, Great Ships, Great Food, Great Guys.

Thanks for that great photo of the Ferry Boat

    Hi Austin,

I think you must be mixed up with another location. The Wallasey and Birkenhead ferries never carried cars, in my life time. Lol

Agree Geoff. I spent my boyhood hovering around the Pier Head and was familiar with the ferries to Wallasey/Birkenhead/New Brighton. Never once saw a vehicle carrier.

Austin I think you are thinking of somewhere else , certainly never happened on the Mersey ferries.

Hello everyone and thank you for the replies. Now I am scratching my head because I am convinced I remember car’s being carried athwartships on these vessels. This will have been late 40’s or early 50’s. They would load on one side and discharge on the other. They loaded midships. There was also a floating road which led down to the pontoon pier known as the landing stage. You could be right of course, I seem to be outnumbered here by the ‘nay’s’. Alright, maybe I dreamt it, so here is another questionable memory for you. Round about this time the RuncornTransporter Bridge was in operation and it consisted of a hanging platform which was winched across on cables.
So , there it is, I’m going to do some research on the ferry

    Austin
