Little happened last year because of the health situation,
normally, much is in organised, community type events.

Many buy the fireworks and keep for celebrations around
the year, which can be annoying.

Nothing like how things were years ago.

    Keith.

#12 We used to make our own bangers during the war , All that is required was Saltpetre, Sulphur , And Charcoal, and a container to put in , usually a toilet roll holder if you could afford a toilet roll. The other ingredients could be bought or stolen at any chemist shop. So a whimper and a bang could include , Or a Blaze of Glory. Or another way to make a much inferior bang was a 2 nuts and a bolt , placing a sulphur match head between the two nuts screwing up reasonably tight. and throwing the missile hard at the ground to achieve an effect. JS

However if you wanted to see human fireworks the play of the day was getting a stick drag the end of it through a pile of dogs dirt , go to some big likely target and say heres a stick for you. He invariably took it and after seeing the look of horror on his face and the sparkle and flames coming from him took to your heels , was good training for the 3 minute mile . It was absolute disaster however if he ever caught you.

Mine was making key bangers, guess thats why most wardrobes and cupboards are missing those little hollow keys. Also used to block up one end of the handlebars of my bike, insert several bangers, and quickly insert a pebble the right size, amazing how far that pebble would travel, i think us kids were the scourge of the village bonfire week, and just a plain menace the rest of the year

In my village most people had a tin bath suspended from a nail in the wall in the back yard. Tremendous bang if you slipped a banger inside one of those.

    hi john sabourn
just like i say,( you can never take the street out of anybody whom has been born on it .)
and your street cred has just gone up.
by the way somebody on here is likely to report you to the ausie terrorist special branch, for teaching people how to makes explosives, best of luck with that one, when they call.

    hi keith
sounds like you could have gone further with your penchant for blowing keyholes out, i knew a kid who lived a couple of streets away, whom was always playing with matches, he didnt last long though he was caught setting fire to his classroom,

    hi marian
i do not know if you have lived in spain, but believe me fireworks are a past time over there night and day even outside fiesta time, as they make their own, possibly with john sabourns recipe.

Many years ago, the kid in the farm by me, blow his finger off with a fire cracker.
My wife was a nurse, she found the finger still in on piece.
She put it in ice, and we rushed him to the hospital.
They sewed it on, and he is as good as new.
Got to watch what you are doing when you have fireworks.

For us the fireworks were a small part, every street, home - family
hence, would buy them, most of the pennies for the guy went to the
corner shop. A lot for us was more territorial, our local kids held prime
sites for our annual begging. Ours was on the steps of the Chain locker
and the sailors were always generous.

The Chain locker at Barry docks was world famous in it's time but, to
close to the Greeks, nowadays the corner shop. Pennies meant sweets
but, we had to have what we called ammo: bangers as well.

There was also the chippy on the way home, though most just had
    scrumps because they were free.

There were enough fireworks going off, rockets etc. For us kids it was
our bomber that was the main thing, we all tried to ensure that what
we called bombers (bonfires) were the biggest on our patch.

We even undertook recces, and reduce the size of other gangs attempts
    and ensuring a win.

Guess we never thought that anyone may hide in them but, double
checked before lighting more to do with our cats and dogs.

By time we did get home, the potatoes and more were ready.

    Keith.
