I have a copy of my Grandfather's crossing the equator certificate signed by Neptune himself. Having great difficulty uploading it on this site. It states:
Neptune Rex, THE EQUATOR 30th December 1941.
Neptune, by grace of mythology, Lord of the Waters, Sovereign of all Oceans, Governor and Lord High Admiral of the Bath, etc.
Know all ye, whereas it pleased us to convene a Court, to be holden on the 30th December 1941, at the hours of 14.30 on the after Deck of H.M. Transprt 'Caseronia'. By these presents let it be known to all the Petty Officer Turnbull carried out the duties of Marshall at the aforesaid Court holden at the aforementioned place.
AND, therefore, for this good and sufficient reason, let it be known that Petty Officer Turnbull having been initiated into the mysteries, rites and traditions associated with the ceremony of Crossing the Equator, has been accepted into the Oceanic Realm of His Exalted Majesty Neptune and shall now and forever receive of all men the profound privileges and immunities of our Ocean Realm wheresoever and whensoever travel directs our Good and Faithful servant.
Given at our court on the Equator this 30th day of December, in the year one thousand, nine hundred and forty one of our Watery Reign, Signed Neptune Rex, (with seal and ribbons)

On a Castle line ship you would not have had the time to see anything other than work.

We used to make crossing the line certificates out of out of use charts, stained with tea and scorched edges to make them more authentic, a chart pen or fountain pen was used for the lettering using something similar to the gothic font. Strangely enough cannot recall my own crossing the line ceremony but have photos of ceremonies on at least 3 of my other ships.

The only certificate I got was soap and a sponge to wash the Cherry Blossom off.
