St Croix, Virgin Islands, on way up from Santos, Brazil, heading to Pasadena on the Houston Ship Canal. Had an excellent run ashore as I remember...

Think I said previously when this post was out before that on the 28 January 1958 I was in a pub Ma Carrols in
Belfast a day not forgotten as came out of same with someone else’s girlfriend and their carryout and a great night was had by yours truly. To add to this occurrence I was 3/ ate on the Hazelmoor and the following ports I well remember aspart of gaining my majority , Cuba Japan, Vancouver , Australia and so forth. Vancouver for a skirmish with a brisk argument. With a waiter in a pub who served the rest of the company but refused to. Serve me. Rather than cause a commotion in the pub I went. Racing back to the ship for proof of being over 21 . On return to pub he just served me with no questions asked about my age. I was fuming by this time and he didn’t even realize how close he came to a smack in the gob by someone who had been drinking from about 13. It did show however how some people use authority to match their own devious malpractices , just another bit of knowledge for similar occurrences in future life. I like to think that it was because like Ivan I still had my boyish looks but know it was down to pure cussedness churlishness and dictatorship and of misuse of power. Cheers JS

On arriving home it was decided there should be a second party for me so the family could be involved.
Down to the local pub to rent some glasses and buy some grog. I had a case of Champagne bought in Cape Town and kept in bond until Southampton.

Ten of us went to the Dog track first then to a pub and then home for a drink.
Some night great aunt who was there brought up the days takings all over the new rug in front of the fire.
Dad was so bad he slept on the sofa with a bucket around his neck and the rest left in the early hours of Sunday morning. Not sure what happened to them.
Sunday mum is so bad she is unable to make the Sunday dinner so I get the job.
Dad went off to work and eventually came home looking like something from a horror movie.

But the problem was my two sisters and younger brother.
Attempting to get the dinner organized they were in the way, how to move them on.

Hey kids, would you like some lemonade?
Yes came the reply from my 11 year old sister and her 8 year old sibling along with my 5 year old brother.
They loved it, Champagne at that age does wonders for you, particularly if you have two glasses.

A very quiet Sunday evening followed with all sleeping well while i went to the pub. Well I had to take the glasses back.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

That old saying , “ mirror ,mirror on the wall whose the fairest of them all” , and “ Why am I “ , never worked for me after 30 or so , Those same plump girls today with all their encumbrances , tattoos , Safety pins though bodily protuberances, and studs in tongues would put me off before ever got started . Cheers JS
