John,
I was in the Crown Posada (just opposite Commons old offices) a few years back, enjoying a good pint of Bass, when the young lady sitting next to me asked if I would like to see her recent piercing.
I looked at her and said, which one, as she had several. Standing up, she lifted her skirt and whipped her pants down to show me the jewel, (the piercing look nice as well).
Needed a whisky chaser after that one and two more pints to regain my composure.

Re: Where were you on your 21st birthday (Second Ediition)
#16 there wasn’t even beer on most tramp ships. This came later. All alcoholic beverages were subject to the masters agreement, who was subject to the owners desires. Mostly differed ship to ship and kept hidden from prying eyes. I think one of the unworkable objects of bringing bars on ships was to try and retain people on board ship in port which was mainly a no goer. In later years were takenoff under the excuse of various much exaggerated mishaps at sea such as illegal oil discharges. Today is a sackable offence in some companies to carry alcohol on ships. In similar cases previously of no alcohol it was carried by companies to grease the palms and throats of various port officials. Probably the same today. There are always two laws to every subject , and the usual story don’t do as I do , do as I say. still applies I would imagine.

PS is there anyone on site who went to the Gravesend sea school. As meeting up with a bunch of old mariners next Thursday and know at least one started his sea career there. He is now 90. Not too sure of his name yet and if he wants will put on here to see if it will jog anyone’s memory. Cheers JS

Loading stores in Suez on a dry ship, chandler gave us a case of beer. Cabin boy dropped it, no survivors. Took several hours to find the cabin boy.

Eric Brown 'Teviot' Royal Mail Lines
I celebrated my 21st August 1959 Loading sugar in Guyabal, Cuba Party on board and then visit two bars in village.
Fidel had not long taken over he could not afford to feed or house his army so sent three or four soldiers to stay on board and be fed.
Soldiers and local population very friendly. A few of us had full beards these were appreciated.
Still have the tankard.
