#82 Obviously not up for degrees in English or History, maybe up for degrees in Butterfly collecting. During my time on this earth I think the most ignorant people I have had the misfortune to meet are those who immediately start spouting about the piece of paper with the word degree on.cheers JS
#83. Brian Sir Walter Runciman had them in 1953. JS

Listening to Talk Radio just now, seems the film Gone with the wind has been banned in Us. Next up Amos and Andy, different strokes and Tom and Jerry.

Think I must have missed out during my time at school. All I ever got was the third degree- must have failed the other two.

Re: The Police State ?
These idiots demonstrating and wishing to remove statues of anyone associated with the slave trade are missing the point. You cannot change history by removing statues or renaming streets, you can only learn from history and attempt to learn from it and not repeat the same mistakes. Liverpool university. Changing the name of one of its halls or renaming Penney lane will not make one iota of difference to any racial inequality, either real or perceived.
We had a leader of the council on equality , or some such government body, on the news saying Britain became Great Britain as a result of slavery. What utter b.s. Britain became Great Britain due to the likes of Newton, Brunel, Stephenson, Jenner, Fleming, Shakespeare, Dickens etc. Etc.
Yes slavery was an abhorrent practice but it came about because African tribal leaders were willing to sell members of other tribes to the slavers in exchange for trinkets.
In future years are there going to be calls to remove statues to the discoverers of DNA, the inventor of HTML and thus the growth of the internet, or the founder of Facebook , all have whom have shaped the world we live in today and possibly the future. All of those have a downside, DNA may lead to designer babies, the internet with its dark side with people trafficking, child pornograhy and Facebook allowing grooming of minors etc. Despite it being a way for many of us to communicate or find old friends.
That's my rant over for the day and apologies for raising non maritime issues.
Rgds
