Lovely to hear your comments, of course slavery has been with us for thousands of years, one of the 'perks' for Roman soldiers was that after a battle the vanquished were sold into slavery and every Legionnaire had a portion of that transaction. But just think, when we were fighting the French and Spanish in the 17th., 18th, and early 19th. centuries we never enslaved our captives, because they were white, and yet the three countries were all slave owning countries, they only enslaved black people.

I appreciate your point as regards the 'enslavement' of children in Britain, in 1856 children below nine were not allowed to work, those between 9-16 could work 12 hours! This in a country described as having the 'Mother of Parliaments', if a man had the vote, and it was determined on the rateable value of his property, those votes were 'open', by a show of hands; your boss could see how you voted. But most of what we would call ordinary workers, in the coalfields and cotton towns did not have a vote, plus many of them lived in housing supplied by owners, you lost your job you lost your home. If that owner said your child had to work your child had to work, and bugger the law.

You mention the Transportation to Australia, this did not end until 1868, this was to clear the prisons and put the cost of their incarceration onto the administration in Australia, and of course to expand British Imperialism. I am proud of the strength that was exhibited by Britain to the rest of the world, but remember, when Britain was the strongest and wealthiest country in the world its people were living in abject poverty.

You say slavery is ended, in the last week there was a major fire in Birmingham at an industrial site, it was a marijuana factory, two people were locked in there to tend the plants, they were illegal immigrants, slaves, one died.


A final point to ponder; if all the demonstrations had been peaceful, with people just carrying banners and going where they told to go, as they have done for many years, would we still be talking about it? My personal opinion, NO.

If you look at the 1881 CENSUS, my great Aunt Emily Aspinall of Bolton was 8 years old and registered as a Coal Miner. It was a 6 day working week then,
Also many other children of that age were also miners. That is slavery.
Dad and Mother had to work in the Cotton Mill at the age of 12, Six days a week and only one week off per year for a "holiday" no pay for that, so the engines could be serviced.
They both died of Byssinosis [ Lung Cancer ] from the Cotton Dust,.

Just had a look at the latest anti slavery protest, this one in Oxford, famous city of learning. A placard campaigning for the toppling of statues in the city of noted colonial benefactors. Protest if you must but get it right! The word 'colonial' had been spelled wrong, and in that place of 'dreaming spires' is unforgivable.

Many thanks for your post, I cannot but agree that your Great Aunt Emily Aspinall was working down the mines in 1881, when Britain was the richest and most powerful empire the world had ever seen, and yet they sent their children down mines and to work in cotton mills. Why! Money! Look at the second and third Marquess of Bute, recognised as the richest men in the world, and who spent millions of pounds on their stately homes, their money, in the main, came from coal, they developed Cardiff as a port to ship the coal out of. Whilst their coal miner's children were being driven underground to work they were expending vast sums to 'pretty' their estates. To make a profit whilst taking the risk in a commercial enterprise is laudable, but to do so on the backs of your under paid workers and their children is not, that is tantamount to slavery, but were these industrial barons excised? No, they were given yet more titles and honour, think of Cecil Rhodes.

As regards to slavery being the slaves fault; Floyd George was unlawfully killed, his character and criminal past have nothing to do with it, a slave is a slave whether they were an illegal immigrant or not, a crime is a crime, there are no graduations depending on the victims past.

That is a good one, possibly the placard writer did not have the benefits of an education from the dreaming spires Ha Ha. I note with interest that you use the American form of the past tense of the verb spell, spelled, rather than the English form, spelt. Now, you were aware of what the placard writer was trying to say, in the same way as I understood you; both messages crystal clear, no need for semantics then.

You cannot wipe the slate clean by destroying Artifacts, history is carved in stone, no matter how hard you try to sweep it under the carnet
of political correctness, sometimes these statues are a reminder of wrongdoing, Winston Churchill had to make some terrible decisions during the
war and they would have weighed heavily on his mind, they were decisions that cost lives but saved many more, President H Truman had to order
the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki but by doing so ended the war and saved more lives, while these idiots are free to rampage, Churchills statue
should be protected even if it means erecting railigs, I think the police need to get tough now, giving a knee doesn't work whith this lot, mayby
one in the groin would work better, cheers.

Interest debate. A Black Scottish Professor has said that removing artifacts, statues and street names is not what should be done, he is all for the status quo.
He believes by removing all references that in fifty or so years history will have eradicated the slave trade, by having reminders, everyone will remember the past.

to, a peaceful protest: the right to protest peacefully
is enshrined under UK law.

Individuals that infiltrate with intent and cause mayhem
are the ones that should be sought out and penalised.
