John, diesels are fitted to turn the rotor when there is insufficient wind. If rotor doesn't turn bearings will sieze due to lack of lubrication.

Deise backup was not on the three wind turbines that I went up in Germany. As has been mentioned they only need a slight wind to function. As I have previously mentioned, my dear German friend and honorary son owns the three, neither do they make a noise when the blades rotate. I've stood at the top within ten feet of the rotating blades, no noise other than a soft hum from the generator I was standing on top of and I could barely feel the breeze.

    Cheers, Rodney

May I enquire as to which post you refer Dave - thank you.

World climate change, affects everybody in this world. Surely all are effected and should be allowed a say either way.

To me, it is better to address all and attempt corrections, before we report it is all now to late.

Though news of Australia burning and we all share concerns, there is much more occurring.

News from a paper full of news and Decency -crap.
Last week it published an article that traced the blame for the current fires back to Captain Cook and others. Didn't read it all as it was full of garbage.

News here is: Storm Brendan batters UK with 80mph winds as country braces for heavy rainfall.

The Republic of Ireland is predicted to be worst affected by Storm Brendan, after Met Eireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service, put out an orange wind warning for the entire country.

Sadly, we cannot sent the rain elsewhere, where it is needed more.

More and more awareness, yet still little action.

Ocean temperatures are the hottest since records began after global warming

"Global warming is real, and it's getting worse. And this is just the tip of the iceberg for what is to come.

"Fortunately, we can do something about it: We can use energy more wisely and we can diversify our energy sources. We have the power to reduce this problem."

A few facts on Australian fires you may be interested in.

1939 fires in Lara Victoria killed some 73 people.
In 1975 cyclone Tracy destroyed Darwin killing hundreds.
1983Ash Wednesday, fire front burning from the Adelaide hills to Warnambool in Victoria, over 2,000 properties lost as well as many lives.
1993 Norlane near Geelong, bad fires three firemen burned alive in their truck. Hundreds of homes gone.
2003 Canberra fires, 500 homes gone and 5 dead.
2009 Black Saturday in Victoria, whole town burned out, over 2,000 properties and 173 dead.
2014 Kilmore fires, burned out half a million hectares of land, homes gone but no lives lost.

Not once on any occasion was climate change or global warming mentioned.

1974/75 some 117 million hectares of state national park burned out between NSW and Queensland.
Fires this years so far have burned out 8.5 million hectares with 3,000 buildings gone and some 28 dead.

Bush fires are not the result of climate change or global warming.

They ae the result of record rainfalls brining about growth, followed by drought which then dries it all out. Lightening strikes, or some mad made effort starts the fires.
But man is too blame, from all the mentioned above there has been an enquriery as to why.
Recommendations made as to how to reduce risk, mainly by reducing undergrowth fuel load, actions which have not been followed up on by many councils and state govs.
Added to that the actions of the 'Greens' in stopping any form of fuel removal from roadsides and open areas.

The Victorian state gov has now banned logging in native forests, a way to reduce fire risk as the men working there know how to manage the bush to reduce fire risk while at the same time encouraging new growth
Ban on cattle in the high country courtesy of the 'Green's, they kept the undergrowth down, this year fires there where never before.

Just as an aside, all wind turbines here in Oz have motors to keep them turning when no wind to prevent rusting up.
