I never bought one as thought it could have been an entrapment put together by the vigilantes ( police) and may have finished up in gaol in that banana republic. The ports on the Rio Plato apart from BA we used to got to were Villa Conctitution , San Nicholas were one tied up to the cliff face and had to kedge yourself off with an anchor you had to lay, and Rosario. Was second mate on the exmoor in 1962 when in collision with the Dutch passenger ship Rhuys in the North channel going into BA she was on her way out. JS

    John.
Was that the Wilhelm Van Rhuys? Met a beautiful stewardess in Holland off her, couldn't get near her though, the crew was watching over her.

May have been Des I was on the forecastle dropping the anchor 20 seconds before we kissed and wasn’t hanging around to read her full name, always just called her the Rhuys. Incidentally it was the ships that kissed there was no stewardess on her focsle to welcome me on board , if there had been a scout around he would have signed me up for the next Olympic Games must have set a new 100 metres record . All this no running on a ship is a fallacy believe me, when push comes to shove one runs. JS

I think the Wilhelm Rhuys was used as an immigrant ship at some stage. Recall some discussion about the ships that served Aus/NZ and her name came up. There was also another Dutch one with a name longer than the road I lived on. I think it went something like "Johanne Van Oldenbarneveldt". Spelling??.

I think I did a more detailed post about the Rhuys/ Exmoor collision. In the background of this maritime occurrence one of the same company’s ships was in Collission in I think the Red Sea at approx. the same time. However my attention was centred on the Exmoor. I seem to think it was the Cragmoor was the casuality in the Red Sea . However both ships were sold off I believe. As there are people on site who worked on the Cragmoor they may have a better idea if I am quoting the right ships name. I could be wrong. Was 1962 or thereabouts. Cheers JS …

#29 No need for that Des, he has a shilling with a piece of string attached and uses continuously. He didn’t come up the Tyne on a banana boat like that one on the Clyde discussed recently. JS
